Daily photo(s) from the Yukon River
There’s not much to show for June 19, 2016, and not many photos, but I know we were busy. Packing for two or three months on the Yukon River required some thought. We knew we would buy lots of things in Whitehorse, not least the food and fuel we needed, but decisions still had to be made about clothes. If you have ever been on a camping trip, you will have perhaps had the ‘underpants’ talk, meaning just how many underpants, bras, and socks does one need for the trip?
As mentioned above, we anticipated being gone for up to three months.
That’s a lot of underwear.
We don’t have that many pants. Even if we added all the pants we’ve owned and discarded… Never that many pants. Pants being the British term for underwear, not American ‘pants’. Just to clarify. ;-)
So what does one do?
Well, we packed about four or five days’ worth of underwear, anticipating a lot of washing in the river and the rain as we paddled down the river.
Yep, about a week’s worth of undies for three months in the wilds.
We also took two full sets of clothes, including just two pairs of trousers (American pants), two shirts, one fleece - you get the picture. We might be ripe but we would be light.
Most of the space and weight in our luggage was taken up with camping gear that we didn’t think we could buy, or didn’t want to, including our tent, sleeping pads, buoyancy aids (PFDs) and paddling gear. We had already contacted an outfitter in Whitehorse, and had purchased two used canoes. Paddles were something we, especially me, looked forward to purchasing in the Yukon. There’s nothing like a quality wooden paddle - we have lots littered about our house, on the stairs, in the living room, etc. - and as we were going to use them day after day, I looked forward to selecting a good one. That I chose one that was slightly too short… Well, we don’t talk about that. ;-)
So, on June 19, we were close to leaving for the Yukon.
We were still waiting on confirmation that we would all be going, and we were late starting as I intended to finish my school year. Both these things would come to plague us, but on the 19th, anyway, we were excited to start. But there were still a few more days to go, and I had to finish school.
So… I’ll be back with more on June 26. See you then.
And Petra’s back in Kindle Unlimited!
In the world of independent publishing, authors talk either of ‘going wide’ and publishing without exclusivity in many stores, or, as many, many authors do, opting into a select programme which is basically Amazon. I have tried to ‘go wide’ on many occasions and it is always a disappointing experience, mostly due to lack of visibility. very few people know of my work.
I was and I continue to be worried about the state of America, and am concerned about having too many eggs in one American basket. But for the time being, having set up my contingency store (Payhip), I have put Petra back into Amazon’s reading programme. She won’t be in my Payhip store for the period she is in Kindle Unlimited.
You can still find Petra’s Greenland Missing Persons books in the library, but no longer in Apple, etc. But then Apple is American too, so…
Yeah… It’s all a bit difficult, really.
Sigh.

A fascinating beginning chapter to the coming YUKON adventure . . despite what you may think of the packing travails being 'boring', I found it kind of intriguing, and started thinking about just how I would plan ahead for a two or three month trip.
And you actually built in a bit of hurdle-conflict (school keeping you from getting going, whether your friends would be able to join you) just like in one of your books!
This is going to be great! 😀
(I have made a note to never buy a 'Coleman Heavy Waterproof' ! ) 😁
What I want to know is, did you bring anything you didn't need, and did you NOT bring something you DID need?
